Treading Softly On The Planet

We've made our beer using the best nature has to offer, but we also make sure that we give something back.

Firstly, we’ve taken lots of steps to reduce our impact on the planet. Lion Nathan, the company behind Barefoot Radler, is committed to brewing great beers while reducing its environmental impact. For example, Lion Nathan is officially recognized as a Greenhouse Challenge Plus Leader and now generates 16% less greenhouse gas emissions than in 1995. That’s the equivalent of taking 9,000 cars off the road every year since 1995.

We’ve also reduced total energy usage by 22% since 1995. That saves enough energy to power nearly 80,000 household fridges every year. What’s more since 1995 total water usage has also been reduced by 30% across the Lion Nathan Group. And we all know how precious water is (almost as precious as beer!). Check out our website to learn more about our environmental initiatives.

CARBON NEUTRAL

Barefoot Radler is our most environmentally friendly product yet, brewed by us to tread softly on the planet. Any greenhouse gas emissions we couldn’t get rid of have been completely offset: Barefoot Radler is the first beer product in Australia to be certified carbon neutral by the Department of Climate Change as part of the government's Greenhouse Friendly™ program. Check out their website if you want to know more.

HOW WE OFFSET

So this is our beer, and here’s where we offset things:

  • The ingredients – things like the malt, hops, and yeast 10%
  • The actual brewing of the beer – everything to do with the production of the beer 21%
  • The packaging – things like making the carton and bottle, and then getting them to our brewery 48%
  • The distribution – bringing our beer to you 21%
  • Total Barefoot carbon footprint (lifecycle emissions) 100%

What exactly are ’carbon emissions‘?

In layman’s terms, our ’carbon emissions‘ are the amount of green house gases produced when making Barefoot Radler. (These emissions are measured in units of carbon dioxide).

In our case, this covers more than just the emissions directly associated with brewing the beer – it also covers areas such as the emissions associated with making our packaging, and transporting our finished cartons to retailers.

By choosing to drink Barefoot Radler, you can be guaranteed that all of the greenhouse gas emissions over the entire lifecycle of the product will be offset which means there is no net contribution to global warming.

The Barefoot Radler beer carton is made of 100% recycled material, the 6-pack carton is made of 75% recycled material, and the bottle is made with a minimum of 30% recyclable material.

Barefoot Rader’s carton and bottle packaging is 100% recyclable – so drink and enjoy and please make sure you remember to place it in the appropriate recycle bin!

YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

Carbon emissions are produced by the things we do such as driving, flying and even the things we buy. COASTCARE

The Barefoot Radler is the perfect beer to chill out with, especially as the sun goes down over the beach. And because we love those moments so much, we support Coastcare, to help preserve Australia’s beaches

Coastcare is community volunteers caring for their coast. Coastcare volunteers identify local environmental problems and work together to achieve practical solutions. There are currently 60,000 active Coastcare volunteers in 2,000 Coastcare groups around the country.

Coastcare groups tackle problems like dune erosion, loss of native plants and animals, storm water pollution, weeds and control of human access to sensitive areas.

The Coastcare program provides opportunities for governments, community, business and interest groups to become actively involved in works to protect and manage our coastal and marine environments.
